Wins away for Wheatchix
Goondiwindi hosted the Round 7 carnival event with the Wheatchix scheduled to play USQ, Goondiwindi and Warwick.
USQ took the field for our first game. The Wheatchix had not played USQ previously this season and were excited to play them as all of the games against them last season were very close. Dalby received the first kick-off and worked down the field nicely. A turnover in the blustery conditions created a breakaway by Saints at their 10m line. I thought there was no chance of stopping the 90m try, but Talhia proved me wrong with a gut busting chase to tackle the breakaway inside our own 20m line. The rest of the Wheatchix chased as quickly as possible, unfortunately USQ scored two phases later. It had been a hectic 50 seconds and we had to hit back fast to stay in the game. The Wheatchix regrouped quickly and by the end of the first half the score placed Dalby 17 points ahead. In the second half the Wheatchix played with the wind at their backs and scored tries from all points of the field with a very special first try ever for Rachelle. The ball skills and keeping the ball alive was a highlight along with the determination in defence. Regrouping after a very early opposition try can be difficult in 7’s, the Wheatchix regrouped admirably. Wheatchix 38 – USQ 5.

Game two of the day put us against Goondiwindi who can never be taken for granted and had just defeated Warwick. Gundy are always very physical and they seemed even more so in the opening exchanges. The Wheatchix though prefer to score tries than to slug out the game in the middle and off the back of a scrum we opened the scoring. Gundy fought hard and caused a fair amount of errors, even winning two scrums against the feed. 15-0 for Dalby at the half time break meant that we could not take any shortcuts for the rest of the game. The Wheatchix did not ease any pressure with great defence which took away all of Goondiwindi’s room and caused turnovers. Dalby’s support play lead to some great team tries, sometimes four players were lined up for a try scoring pass. Right on full time a Wheatchick crossed the try line and forgot to ground the ball, the player owned up to the referee and in the spirit of the game the try was not counted. Sometimes weird things happen! Wheatchix 27 – Goondiwindi 0.

Unfortunately Warwick forfeited as 2 of their 7 players were injured, I hope they can recover for the last regular season carnival day on 27 July. Thanks Gundy for hosting a great day, the crowd there watched some good quality rugby 7’s.
